For those with infertility or those trying to build a family through nontraditional means, the holidays can be a constant reminder of what is desperately wanted. Having a medical condition you have no control over is bad enough, but if you also face the reality of having limited or no health insurance to cover the medical care needed to obtain our family-building goal is exasperating. We understand. We’ve been there.
We would like to encourage you, even challenge you, to give yourself a gift this holiday season. Empower yourself. Take steps to give yourself the best chance possible to build your family.
Did you know currently more than 68 million US residents of reproductive age are living without some form of insurance coverage for the disease of infertility and one in six couples are currently living with this condition? Your actions will have an impact on more than yourself. You would be giving a gift to the infertility community as well.
We encourage those of you not living with infertility, but impacted nonetheless, to take action as well. That is one of the best gifts you could give your friend or loved one.
Here are some ideas:
- Approach your employer. There is still time for infertility benefits to be included within some open enrollment programs.
- Contact the Department of Health and Human Services. This department will define recommendations for essential health benefits. HHS will accept public input until January 31, 2012. You can e-mail them at EssentialHealthBenefits@cms.hhs.gov.
- Take time to review the Fertility Within Reach (FWR) website. Our resources provide factual and supportive information you can use to effectively communicate with decision makers.
- Request an Exemption of Benefits from your insurance carrier. You can use the supportive information found on the FWR website to strengthen your request.
Fertility Within Reach is dedicated to help you get through the holidays. We encourage you to put a purpose behind your pain. The sense of empowerment can help take the sting out while helping yourself and others at the same time.
