Empower the Overwhelmed

When it comes to advocating for yourself with a legislator, insurer, or employer, you are making the choice to be public with your infertility and desire to build a family. This step can be incredibly freeing and therapeutic. To be open, honest, and raw can be scary at times, BUT, the end result is empowerment. We highly recommend you give it a try.

Empowerment can mean different things to different people. If you agree that one of the perks of self-advocacy is empowerment, then we would suggest you figure out what that experience will mean to you. When you are self-advocating there can be tough days or disappointing moments. Understanding this portion of the outcome, the sense of empowerment, can help keep you going.

Fertility Within Reach would like to help you figure out what self-empowerment will mean to you. Here is the challenge: Try to use the letters of the word “Empowerment” to describe what you think it will feel like to be empowered. We’ve put an example below, but it’s just an example. Everyone has different perspectives, experiences and feelings. There are no right or wrong answers here; just an opportunity for self-discovery.

Empowerment
Energetic
Motivating
Powerful
Outstanding
Wonderful
Exciting
Relieved
Maternal
Enthusiastic
Nurturing
Tenacious

What do you think? Do you agree with any of these? Have you experienced empowerment and already know what to expect? If so, we hope you will comment because your experiences might be the inspiration individuals need to feel comfortable advocating.

Sandy O’Keefe and I have become empowered educators. Our past legislative experiences and successes have lead us to several conclusions including; feeling a sense of empowerment is transmittable. Once you realize you can self-advocate on one issue, the resulting inner strength makes it possible to use your powerful voice for anything.

Now let’s compare empowerment to an alternative condition most everyone has encountered: Overwhelmed.

Overwhelmed
Obsolete
Vulnerable
Exhausted
Reluctant
Withdrawn
Helpless
Engulf
Lost
Miserable
Emotional
Depressed

What do you think?  Do you agree with those descriptive words for “Overwhelmed”? Can you relate?  Are you tired of feeling overwhelmed? Are you ready to take action and experience a sense of empowerment? We hope so.

If you are ready to ignite change, we are prepared to support you and teach you the skills to become your own best advocate. Take this opportunity to make a difference in your life and the infertility community.

Please remember, you are not alone. We hope one day soon you will believe your fertility is within reach.
