NIAW – You might be seeing these four letters in the coming weeks. They stand for National Infertility Awareness Week. April 21st – 27th of 2013 is a time, recognized by the Department of Health and Human Services, to bring greater awareness to the disease of Infertility. This is also an opportunity to inform policy makers and society about the socio-economic and emotional toll of this condition.
What can you do? Talk about infertility! Infertility a deeply personal and private condition, but it’s not rare. It impacts 1 in 6 couples and you are surrounded by people touched by it. To make this condition important in the eyes of policy makers and those who pay insurance premiums, we MUST share, make them aware, and ask them to care.
You don’t have to have infertility to use your voice and make a difference.
Who could you talk to?
Communicate with your Employer – Ask you employer to include infertility health benefits during your next open enrollment.
Communicate with an Insurer – One example is to write the Medical Policy Director of an insurance company and ask them to offer infertility benefits.
Communicate with a Legislator – Talk to your legislator and ask for a law that would create equality in family building and prevent discrimination.
Communicate with your Neighbor/Friend/Family Member – The topic of infertility needs to lose its taboo status. That change starts with YOU!
