What happened to “the time of my life”? The 20’s and 30’s are supposedly the best years of our lives. In theory we are “done” with education, fiercely independent, and enjoying our social life.
Like children who experience trauma and sadly “lose their childhood”, Infertility robbed my husband and me of the best years of our lives.
Our 20’s and 30’s were filled with strain, regimen, disappointment and heartache as we struggled to build a family. Because we did not realize there were options, we chose this way of life, as building a family meant more than anything in our lives. Specifically, we spent over a decade avoiding alcohol, pain relievers, hot tubs, having multiple surgeries, and depleting the romance from our young love.
My frustration and disappointment stems from the fact that it didn’t need to be this way. It took twelve years of trying before we were blessed with our daughter. We did not know we could approach our employer to add Infertility benefits, write our insurer and request an exemption of benefits, know how to effectively appeal an insurance denial, or contact our legislator to bring equality to health care.
