In Ottawa Canada, Hot 89.9’s Win a Baby Contest, which began after Labour Day, generated plenty of controversy from organizations that feel it exploited infertile couples. Fertility Within Reach (FWR) celebrates Hot 89.9 for bringing attention to the disease and creating an opportunity of hope for infertility patients.
FWR questions the claims that people were exploited. Having been a fertility patient without insurance coverage for treatment, I can assure you; this contest was a chance to gain access to necessary medical care. Nonprofit organizations from all over the world, including the United States, offer such opportunities, why not a well-publicized radio station? We are glad groups complained about this contest because it helped bring even more attention to the subject of infertility. Hopefully some additional awareness was created.
We are thrilled for the five finalists who were all awarded free fertility treatment. How wonderful that the radio station chose to select all finalist couples instead of one. Until fertility treatment is available to all patients in need, we hope more opportunities like this one are created in the future.
Perhaps this idea will inspire you to contact your local media and see if they would be willing to sponsor such a rewarding contest.
